Writerly Advice

Q. Any advice for aspiring writers?
A.
Yes, but you may not like it: Know why you want to write before you devote a big chunk of your life to trying it. If you are writing because you have something you really need to say, then good luck finding an agent and getting published -- but don't let lack of progress in this regard keep you from exploring other options. Publishing-on- demand has changed  everything and you may find it gives you the outlet you need and connects you with readers who will  appreciate your work.

On the other hand, if you want to be a writer so you can make millions off of your bestsellers and your primary goal is commercial success -- you better realize your chances of making this happen are less than wining the lottery regardless of your talent... and you better get big money going in the first time around. If you don't represent a substantial investment to your publisher, you will not receive the marketing support you need to get you where you want to be (and you may not receive any support at all). That's just the way it is. You'll need to either adjust your expectations -- or hold out for a life-changing advance.
